What happened at Wimbledon yesterday??????

Hi all,

That question is more more out of shock than anything else. With close to a dozen top seeds eliminated most at the hands of not just any unseeded players but the ones not featuring even in the top100 in just the first three days, any sports enthusiast will that Wimbledon 2013 has been hit by a speeding train & it's wreck out there.

The massacre on day 3 started with the news that Gaint Killer Steve Darcis  the  world no. 139 would not take on the court as he was injured in his First Round win over 2 time champion Rafael Nadal . But that was small blip in retrospect as the day saw the likes of  Jo Wilfred Tsonga (6), John Isner(18), Mario Cilic, Victoria Azeranka(2) , Radek Stepanek & Yaroslava Shvedova going out either due to retirement or walkover taking the count to 7 on single day which is the highest pullout in the game's history.
Many of them blamed the surface as not being good enough & the playing conditions being dangerous.

And as if that wasn't enough the biggest upsets where still left to come & they came one by one with their aww & shock increasing with each one. First in the line was former champion Lleyton Hewitt going out at the hands of young & flamboyant Dustin Brown.Though he himself was responsible for the elimination of  11th seed Stanislas Wawrinka on Day 1, but he failed to carry on that form against Brown who kept on coming at him.

Former women's no 1 Jalena Jankovic & Caroline Wazniaki also bowed out of the tournament losing out to lower ranked opponents.

But, the biggest loss in the Ladies Singles was that of Maria Sharapova(3) who lost in straight sets to Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal not only the game but in the screaming department too.

In the open era Court No. 2 at the All England Badminton club has been known as the Champions Graveyard with the greats like McEnroe, Becker, Agassi, Seles all being casualties at this court & Sharapova has just joined the list.

But, yesterday Center Court Wimbledon was in a mood to snatch away this dreadful title from Court No. 2 as it was the one that caused the most powerful & biggest damages. The first match was scheduled for the no. 2 women's seed Victoria Azarenka but she could not take field due the first round injury sustained & thus started a abysmal chain of events. It brought on Ana Ivanovic another former world no 1 who too lost out in straight set. Next to go Jo Wilfred Tsonga the 6th seed, retiring in the first set.

But, it was not over yet as the biggest fish was yet to be caught in this trap & Center Court was in no mood to let go. Roger Federer , the World no .3 , the man with 17 Grand Slams, 7 of which are Wimbledon stepped  foot on his favorite surface against a certain Mr. Sergiy Stakhovsky, 116  ranked player in the world & a name very few had heard before. Little did either of them know that they were entering in a duel on such a day, history was written as Stakhovsky took every one back in time with his wonderful Serve & Volley Tennis, a style which is hardly played these days & style that clearly took the "King" of-guard as he couldn't find the answer to the very tough questions the young lad was asking. He threw himself at every thing Federer sent his way & when he missed so did Roger. It was a very uncharacteristic day for the defending champion as he missed both his backhand & forehand shots equally & as result was sent packing with a 4-set defeat & scorekine reading 6-7,7-6,7-5,7-6 in the favour of Stakhovsky.

The only one who came unscathed from yesterday's wreckage was the local hero Andy Murray, who won his match in straight set & thus bringing some order to the chaos meanwhile also strengthening his challenge for the title three biggest opponents of his half of draw Nadal, Tsonga & Federer have all lost, & his biggest challenge before final can be the the 15th seed Nicolas Almagro a much smaller worry in retrospect of what could have been if not for these upsets.

Although, it is sad when we look at yesterday results as we lost so many greats in a single day, but it's also nice to see so many young names coming up with these victories as it ensures a bright future of tennis as finally we can see someone outside the Big-4 winning important matches & posing them some serious challenges.

I'm still trying to find out the reasons & nature of what happened but can surely tell you that I'm still not sure of What happened at Wimbledon yesterday??????
If you know please do tell via your comments.

That's all for today.
Have a nice Day
